Career Success Certificate Program

Students often enter the University Career Center (UCC) hoping to find that ‘secret” to ensure success in their job search. While there is never a guaranteed method to getting a job after college, the UCC has created a new program to help you get closer to your goal. The Career Success Certificate program has been established by the UCC to provide you with a recommended guide of services, programs, and events that will assist you through four stages of career planning. This program is open to all majors and class levels, and is designed to dispel the myth that the career search is supposed to begin senior year. Although this program is NOT a guarantee or a specific endorsement of any one student over another, it is as close to a direct route towards career success as you can get.

The Career Success Certificate is centered on the four categories of career planning: Assess, Explore, Experience, and Transition. In order to complete the program, you choose among a menu of various programs and events within each category and gain points for completing each activity. Sample programs that you may choose to participate in include: a career advising appointment with your career advisor, attending a career fair, completing a university-sponsored internship program, service to the community through a university-sponsored program, completing a leadership program or leadership experience on campus, attending a free GRE, GMAT, or LSAT test preparation workshop, etc. There are many options for you to choose from depending on your interests and goals. When you have earned the minimum amount of points in each of the four categories, you are awarded a certificate of completion! The program is designed for you to go at your own pace. You could technically earn the minimum amount of points in as little as a semester or take your full academic career. It is recommended you spread out your career planning over the course of several years if you are able to do so.

The tangible benefits to participants include an official certificate to be awarded at the completion of the program and the opportunity to list the awarded certificate on your resume for future employers or graduate/professional schools to see how you have proactive planned for your career success. Additionally, the very nature of completing the minimum amount of activities in the program will add the tangible benefit of setting you on course for a successful career search/graduate school search. In addition, we will be spotlighting certificate program “graduates” on our student success story pages and hopefully using your stories to inspire future students. Be among the first UNC Charlotte students to complete this program!
