How to Make the Most of Your Major!

By: Sara Ingram

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We’ve all heard this question before, and college is the best place to figure out the answer! Choosing a major for your college career is a daunting task; how do you know what job you’re going to want in four years? Six years? Or more! There is nothing wrong with starting out as an undeclared student. I began that way, and I met many more undeclared freshmen than any other major. This allows you to explore your choices through your electives your first couple of years. As an undeclared freshman at UNC Charlotte you may take a “Freshman Seminar” course. This course teaches you a little bit about a lot of things here on campus as well as college in general. Teachers of these courses will almost always have answers to your questions, and if they don’t, they’ll know exactly where to find them. I remember during my Freshman Seminar course, a representative from the UCC came in to tell us about the multiple personality and career assessment tests we could take for free. I first took the Myer’s Briggs Type Indicator test and found that my personality type was outgoing and that I should look into working in an environment that would let me meet and work with people. This gave me the reassurance I needed to go out and look for an internship, one that would challenge me and allow me to grow.

Before declaring a major, take a look at the prerequisites and the courses to be completed. Check out their descriptions, what kind of work they entail, and what kind of jobs the major may lead to. Choose the one that most interests you and seems most appealing. Say you declare an English major and a semester in, you’re already growing tired of the reading and writing. Schedule an advising appointment with your assigned advisor and tell them what it is you do and do not like. They’ll help you to pick a middle ground; after all, that’s what they’re here for!

Another way to explore possible majors is to visit the UCC’s Majors Day Fair! This year it will be held on October 20th from 10am to 1pm in the Cone Center Lucas Room. This event is especially helpful for undeclared students. You will get the chance to talk to representatives of each undergraduate major and learn about the paths that they take. To make it even better, there will be free refreshments (always a plus)! So make the most of your major by exploring before declaring. Read up on all of the courses offered and figure out what you enjoy the most. Use your first couple of years to do this through signing up for electives that explore multiple areas of interest and visiting the many events and workshops the UCC has to offer. You’ll soon be on your way to that “grown-up” career.

Check back on October 15th for how to make the most of your internship and job search!
