Be Unforgettable: Preparing for Interviews

By Kate Grove, PCA

Vice Presidents and personnel directors of the one hundred largest corporations in the US were asked to describe some of their most unusual experiences interviewing prospective employees. This is what they came up with:

  1. A candidate announced they hadn’t had lunch and proceeded to eat a hamburger and French fries in the interviewer’s office.
  2. A candidate explained that their long-term goal was to replace the interviewer.
  3. Applicant refused to sit down and insisted on being interviewed standing up.
  4. A candidate dozed off during interview.

The employers were also asked to list come of the “most unusual” questions that have been asked by job candidates.

  1. “What is it that you people do at this company?”
  2. “What is the company motto?”
  3. “Why aren’t you in a more interesting business?”

It is amazing what some people will do or say under the pressure of an interview when they are unprepared. These are only some of the funny or embarrassing things candidates have said or done while interviewing. There were plenty more to choose from, but, from stories I’ve heard, the antics listed above are things that interviewers have actually come across more than once.

Does the idea of interviewing for a job frighten you? Don’t let yourself be an “unforgettable” candidate for the wrong reasons! That’s one of the many things we’re here for at the University Career Center. Every student at UNC Charlotte has their own career advisor who works in the Career Center to help you, and other students in your major, to navigate through today’s job market. They can give you great information about your field and how to get started making the right moves. And, they can help you prepare for interviews so you don’t become another embarrassing story.

One great way to become more comfortable with interviews is to PRACTICE! You can make an appointment with your career advisor to do a “Mock Interview” after which your career advisor can offer you real advice about how to improve your own personal interview skills. Another way to gain this essential practice time is to participate in the UCC’s Mock Interview Day. Several employers that recruit UNC Charlotte students have offered their time to come and help students practice interviewing. You just show up dressed like you’re going to an actual interview, do everything just as you would if it were real … only this time, when it’s over you’ll receive valuable feedback from a real recruiter!

This year’s Mock Interview Day will be held on Friday, February 4 ALL DAY in the Cone Center Lucas Room. Visit our website career.uncc.edu to pre-register for this event (through NinerJobNet) so you can be the “unforgettable” candidate for all the RIGHT reasons.
