Internships Increase Your Chances of Getting Hired Following Graduation!

By Anna Salas

According to a study done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 42.3% of graduating seniors who completed an internship received at least one job offer, whereas only 30.7% of graduating seniors without internship experience received an offer. It has also been found that as a result of completing an internship, graduates’ time frame spent looking for a job decreases from six to three months.

If that is not incentive enough, there are also many other reasons why completing an internship or other experiential learning opportunity is a beneficial experience for you. An internship or other experiential learning program gives you an opportunity to gain real-world experience in a career field of interest, which can help you to develop marketable skills that future employers will be looking for. An internship can also provide you with an invaluable opportunity to become more familiar with the day-to-day responsibilities, opportunities, and limitations of a specific occupation.

Experiential learning experiences can serve as a great opportunity to network with professionals in your career field, which can be useful for finding additional internships, identifying mentors, and possibly securing a job. Upon graduation, a great deal of students get hired by employers that they previously completed an internship or experiential learning experience with. Many companies have internship and co-op opportunities set up in order to train and later hire interns as full-time employees. In addition, these employers can serve as professional references for future employment opportunities and for graduate school.

So, how can you find an internship or other experiential learning experience? Look no further than the UNC Charlotte University Career Center! We offer a variety of experiential learning experiences to students including 49erships, Service Learning 49erships, and Co-ops. In addition, other internship opportunities can be found through students’ academic departments. Instructions on how to apply for all the Experiential Learning experiences offered through the UNC Charlotte University Career Center can be found HERE. In addition, the upcoming Experiential Learning and Part Time Job Fair will be a great opportunity for students to speak with company representatives about the possibility of securing an internship or co-op. The fair will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 1 – 4 pm in the Cone Center Lucas Room at UNC Charlotte. This fair is ONLY open to UNC Charlotte students and alumni.
